Picasso and my Haggadah
Nov. 27th, 2011 06:57 pmBecause it's part of the photoshop pepper spray meme, I took my first good look at Güernica, having previously read and heard about probably without ever seeing it. If anyone else hasn't seen it and is curious, here it is:

It was painted in 1937. When I saw it, I was astonished how familiar the style was, more than some random Picasso painting would be. There is artwork in the famous and dear to me Saul Raskin Haggadah (1941) that is nearly a copy of pieces of it. I imagine the homage was intentional and meant to be pondered, but being born in a later generation, I never knew of the connection.
