We really need better ways of capturing and storing some of the energy in the air and the ocean. That way, the more heat we inadvertently add to the system by carbon emissions, the less need we would have to add yet more heat.

The energy that is in the air and water before we capture it. So yes, from the process's perspective, "from." From the status quo's perspective, "in."

I like this idea. Find a way to harvest thermal energy and transport it to where you want it. Some huge geothermal well, except going into the atmosphere, now down into the earth.
