The burden of winning
Aug. 4th, 2011 02:48 amThe first of what looks like at least three semifinals for which I'll qualify is in Automibile at 9:00 tomorrow (today) morning—six and a half hours from now. I'm not sleepy. I've been getting up around 10: or 11:00 and not fully at the con until 1:00. I'll also be in the semis in Power Grid and Amun-Re. I still have reasonable hope of making it in Princes of Florence, though not from the first heat, in which I finished a somewhat distant second. Puerto Rico is so big, they have a quarter final round in between the open heats and the semis. If I play several heats, I've got a good chance of making the quarters, but probably no further.
The light and other and/or new to me games I've been playing this year are away from the tournaments, with friends (old and new) in open gaming. So I'm unlikely to advance in any of the more luck-heavy shorter games I sometimes play on a lark. For instance, though I played in a Ra heat (and might play in another) I skipped Ivanhoe (in which I'd stand a good chance of advancing) to continue hanging with friends.
