Make lemonade, indeed.
May. 25th, 2011 10:15 amI think this stolen laptop will turn out to be one of the best things that ever happened to me. There are so many things on the computer that I do that and that I find very interesting and pass a lot of time but do not advance my life. And since my life is nowhere near where I want it to be, this is a good kick to change my habits.
I think it was Jon Stewart or maybe Bill Maher who said that instead of all the bullshit reasons he was told to not smoke pot, he wished someone had told him that weed makes you not bored when you're supposed to be bored so that you get up and find something better to do. Well, that's what the computer has been to me. I think I won't replace it with anything for three weeks (which brings me through the LSAT and one week after) and then decide what combination of desktop and/or laptop and/or smart phone and/or tablet will meet my needs. For now, I don't have any of those.
In the mean time, my work comupter is my main access to the world. It won't let me get to Facebook, so if you're reading this and comment and want me to respond to the comment, comment here on Live Journal. If you don't have an account, I'd appreceite it if you identify yourself.
I think I will use my landlady's computer a few times a week to make moves in games that have already started where I'd use up all my vacation days and start forfeiting games if I left it alone for three weeks. But I won't be spending significant time (if any) on Facebook or the other things I usually keep up with.

Date: 2011-05-25 02:41 pm (UTC)In my case, the computer is where I do my hobby. That does have its boredom-related downsides.

Date: 2011-05-25 05:29 pm (UTC)But I do really want to figure it all out and move on, as soon as I can. One aspect of the problem is that "smartphone" is a term so vague as to be near-useless; I got what I *thought* was a smart phone and it's not near smart *enough* to do what I need. Possibly spending another hundred on the phone would have gotten me one that did the job or possibly not; from where I am now I don't have a way to know.
I'll give you a ping later. Do you have a landline at your new place, or are you cell-only now?
best,
Joel
