I don't really mind using the web interface, but if there's a good enough reason to change, I will. What's the scoop?

(I've just changed to a paid account, should that be relevant.)

I used the "Livejournal" client for a while. It worked wonderfully, then suddenly it stopped working at all. (Now, after I log in, the program runs in the background, but the application window is invisible. Removing and reloading does not help.) I switched to Lochjournal, which is inferior in many different ways (no help feature, no dictionary for spell-checking), but actually works on my machine.

What makes either of them better than the web interface?

Good question, since these days I use the web interface... Drop-down menus for HTML tags, if that matters. It'll store your drafts if you want to work on them later (or if the LJ server is being wonky and won't let you post). There may be others. I found the client more convenient when I used dial-up; now that I have a DSL line the web interface works just as well.

Go to mozilla.org, download Firefox. Then go to wherever it is you get Firefox extensions, and download Deepest Sender. I'm using Gentoo Linux, but it ought to work in Windows just the same.

Deepest Sender was easily the best client I've found for a Linux box.

Another option is what I've just set up, which is posting by e-mail. There's some scheme with PINs, but I uploaded my GnuPG public key and instead just sign the e-mail. The instructions are buried somewhere under "Advanced Options" or the like of the posting-by-e-mail instructions.
