In his last election (shortly before he had a stroke and resigned) Frank Hogan, who had served over 30 years as New York County District Attorney, was challenged by a young, highly regarded reformer. Hogan had the nomination of all four major parties in the state at the time (Democratic Republican, Liberal, and Conservative) and did win, but the challenger, running by petition, got about a third of the votes, iirc. It's the only contested election I remember where one candidate had the nomination of four or more real parties and the other had none, but it was a real race. Does anyone know who the challenger was and what became of him?

Bill vanden Heuvel!

16th result on Google for "new york county" "district attorney" 1973 election - I cannot claim to have known this beforehand.

And he seems to have an article in Wikipedia - his daughter is Katrina vanden Heuvel, the editor of The Nation.

Thank you!

Interesting that that race stayed in my mind but his last name never did. When I picture what my life might have been like had I not had psychological difficulties with school and had been living at closer to my full potential in my college years, his daughter, um, plays a part. :)
