By coincidence, the Indian Head Cent was introduced in 1859, Lincoln's semicentennial.

The Lincoln Cent replaced the Indian Head Cent in Lincoln's centennial, 1909.

The Lincoln Memorial replaced the wheat stalks on the reverse (back) of the cent in 1959, Lincoln's sesquicentennial.

I wonder what if any change they will make in Lincoln's bicentennial next year.

Obama, who is extraordinarily conscious of Lincoln in so many ways, who does a convincing job of channeling Lincoln's seriousness of purpose, magnanimity, conniving forethought, and rhetorical style, will take office just 24 days before the 200th anniversary of Lincoln's birth.

I’m getting the creeps about 1909, because it will be the centennial of the three of my grandparents with whom you probably weren’t familiar.

It probably doesn’t help that one of the great grandparents was already in his sixties at the time, and a Civil War veteran, but the grandparents are people I remember hanging around with.

Of mine, the three whose dates were always honest were born between 1900 and, I think, 1905 (maybe 1903). My mother's mother may have been born as early as 1899, but pretended to have been born later, to make her marriage to my grandfather more acceptable to his family. At least I think that's the story. If I have it right, he knoew her true age, but about nobody else thought she was born 5 or 6 years later, until he died and she got Alzheimer's, so others in the family had to take over her care and papers.

Grandma Flossie was born on Flag Day in 1913, and so I am less than one year from being the same age she was when I was born. Since I tend to think in terms of death, that’s half her age if she hadn’t died 11 or 12 years ago; as opposed to having lived half as long and it’s downhill from now on, which I’ve already exceeded.

The obverse? The Onion is celarly numismatically illiterate. If the clock tower at Flatbush and Atlantic appears on a coin any time in the next several centuries, it will be on the back, not the front.

Well people have been talking for years about getting rid of the 1 cent coin, but I doubt it will happen next year.

I'd like to see them take the occasion of doing so, and putting Lincoln's likeness on a new, massively distributed two dollor coin. The twoonie works well in Canada.

That is actually a great idea. I would very much like to see the stupid penny go away (or at least retailers round to the nearest dime). It would also be a good chance to get away from dollar bills and the ill-fated $2 bill (I use it to annoy people). I'm still amazed at how people don't consider change as real money, and are even willing to pay 7% to some stupid machine just to convert it to bills.

The downside of getting rid of $1 bills of course would be that it would raise the cost of stuffing bills down gogo dancers' panties :)

When I leave Jeffersons as part of all or restaurant tips (depending on the size of the bill), the server is usually delighted. And, assuming I've left a good percentage, I'm remembered when I go back to the same restaurant.

I suppose the same might by applied to strip clubs.

that the bar at many strip joints will give change for a drink in 2s.
