McAuliffe promised back in April that it would be over by June 15, and it seemed to me he knew what he was talking about and knew that it had to happen.

Whether it was McAuliffe who was the one who triggered this, or whether it was someone else with the same commitment to sanity, (Ickes, maybe) I don't know. But whoever it was, it's over. As I've said it would be, despite the alarmism I've seen from many quarters that have gotten so wrapped up in campaign partisanship that they've seen the Clinton campaign as Gollum, who just won't stay away.

I have difficulty figuring out what this says, but I think you are saying you told people that the Clinton campaign is not a distorted hobbit-like creature. :)

Now here is my hypothesis: They had to go to Hillary’s Senate colleagues to tell her to drop out, because the main force opposing dropping out was Bill Clinton, so that they could not tell her themselves without becoming Enemies of Bill.

Well, the way I've heard it, she's not actually going to go so far as to concede on Saturday. She's just going to "suspend" her campaign and consider her options. She's still complaining that she won more of the popular vote than Obama (and not mentioning that she can only get this tally by ignoring the caucus states).

She’s essentially conceded and endorsed; the rest is attention-getting. She and Bill no longer are the alpha pair in the Democratic dog pack, and it is going to take a while to sink in; they have a natural urge to keep people talking about them, but that will fade. Also there is her campaign debt, which she might like the Obama campaign to buy out so she can close up shop.
