Copied from a comment I left in Fred's ([livejournal.com profile] frisky070802's) journal:
I think Gore is a mediocre candidate, which may be good enough this time. The others, being less tested, may turn out to be better or worse at the job of being a candidate. I suspect Edwards is better, and the two front-runners are worse, but not much worse.

And I think Gore would be the worst of the four at the candidate-like aspects of the job of President. He'd rather only communicate with smart people.
And when it comes to policy, he's still no Superman. Probably a smidge to the right of Hilary. Yes, I said to the right. Remember back in 1988, when it seemed the smart thing to do to support Dukakis in the early primaries, because Gephardt was to much of a demagogue and Gore was way too conservative?

Compared to what we have in office at the moment, however, he's entirely reality-based...

Of course. And even compared to anyone running on the Republican side for next time, Gore looks very good indeed.* But compared to other Democrats, I think he mostly looks good because he's not currently running.

*It would be nice to have a Republican I could point to and say "I don't want him to get elected, but at least he wouldn't be awful." You know, just so I could show that my votes aren't based more on party than they actually are.
