Well, they didn't include Muslims, which would probably top even atheists.

By most sane definitions, I'm straight. I'm capable of being attracted to men, but it's not what really works for me. IN the late 80s and early 90s, I publicly identified as bisexual, because I thought it an important to fight prejudice. After working for so many groups I wasn't a part of, it seemed fitting to own the extent to which I do belong to one group that needed representing. Eventually, that got old (though I still identify as bi, depending on the implicit definition in any given circumstance). It felt like the largest part of the battle had been won, and like the rest would take more passage of time than active effort.

In the last few years, I've been talking about how my values don't come from religion, even in venues where that's taken to be very unusual. I guess my instinct for what needed doing was on target.

Anyway, the poll gives part of the reason I think it's fairly likely that Huckabee will come from nowhere to win the Republican nomination.

I doubt that ‘atheist’ would outperform ‘muslim’, even though in practice it’s ‘safer’ to be an atheist. Atheists don’t say prayers, wear funny beanies, etc., so they aren’t ‘threatening’. However there is little public censure for saying bad things about atheists, and much for saying bad things about Black people. I think what you have here is a rough measure of how ‘acceptable’ it is to verbally denigrate the given groups. (‘Being older than Ronald Reagan was but without the wit’ not necessarily included.)

Anyway we already know that the half of the American voters who are, overall, the more prejudiced, are precisely those most prone to voting for the gay man in a gay man-straight man race, as long as the gay man is supposed to be wearing fine and very straight new threads.
