Scott Garrett is the most conservative Rep from the northeast. And actually, he's even more conservative than that. Others who appear that nutty are often just going along with their districts. NJ-05, Garret's district, is Republican, but not overwhelmingly so and not mostly loony.

Dennis Shulman, came from nowhere to beat a popular state legislator in the primary to face Garrett in what few people thought would be a competitive race. And when I say nowhere, in politics being a being psychologist rabbi is about as nowhere are you get. But Shulman has proven to be a wonderfully engaging candidate (with fine positions on the issues) and the race is now up in the air. Bloomberg's endorsement earlier this week will probably help. The polling shows Garrett with a small but significant lead, but I expect Republican turnout in Democratic states (including New Jersey) to be lower than most pollsters are saying. Which puts this race completely up in the air.

It's not too late for small contributions to help. I just made my second $15 contribution of the year. I hope you'll consider doing the same.
