The Abdication of Bill Clinton
Jan. 27th, 2008 11:07 pmI think it's queasy-making, but he had to take a role in the campaign. If he didn't, that would be seen a huge snub of his wife. But given his additional role as younger elder statesman, he was under a strong special obligation to take the high road in his advocacy.
That he's done just the opposite will cripple his position as elder statesman in the future even if Hillary wins, but much more so if she doesn't. He's doing it as a calculated risk, deciding that it's more important (or he's under more obligation) to help her win than it is to help the party and the country in other ways over the next 20 years.
