It's very rare that the world gives me major surprises any more. Even more so pleaseant surprises. But today's news did.

Ariel Sharon is among the most despicable major politicians in a democracy anywhere in the world. Worse, IMO, than Le Pen, Bush, or Austria's Haider, about as bad as Cheney, though not as bad as the folks from India's BJP. But I hope he succeeds. If I lived in Israel, I'd probably continue to support Meretz Yachad (that's a party, not a person), but only if they say that they'd be open to being in a coalition with the monster.

The last time I felt this creeped out by (even vicariously) working with someone was over 20 years ago when DM [livejournal.com profile] stormlorde made our very good D&D party (I was a paladin) work with the devil Sleazespit, ably and very creepily played by [livejournal.com profile] chemoelectric.

I'm sure Sharon would insist on conditions that I consider unnecessary and likely counterproductive, but he can pull enough of the center-right with him so that this can get done with much less danger of a civil war. OTOH, I hope he's got good bodyguards. Anyone playing dead pools next year should consider putting him at the top of their lists. Jewish 'fundamentalists' are every bit as vicious and evil as their Christian and Muslim kin. And the fanatics among the Palestinians and throughout the Muslim world would also do anything to derail any settlement, if they could.
